You may be thinking why would 90% of these hashtags be banned, the simple answer is that over time these popular hashtags have been abused for their purpose and inappropriate content that goes against Instagram’s rules have been linked to these hashtags.

There are alternatives hashtags you can use instead of the banned ones.

For example, #kanas is banned but you can use #kanascity or there may be an emoji added to the end of the banned hashtag, these work perfectly.

Instagram allow you to use 30 hashtags per post however you may struggle or wonder how on earth will you think of 30 different hashtags for your post.

Here are my simple tips to help you select those hashtags.

  • Look at your post/photo, start to associate words, topics, subjects that are relevant to your post/image and start typing these into hashtags. Look at what appears, don’t worry about using more than one that appears, different abbreviations.

  • Start to include hashtags that fit with your branding, industry. Be more specific here.

  • Then add hashtags that you think your followers would be following.

  • Look at following hashtags that relate to you, your interests, business and your target market. By using the search function (this is what looks like a magnifying glass icon) to locate these topics and then click the follow button.

  • There are also apps out there that can help you generate hashtags, however, please be careful with these as they may have random hashtags added and even include banned or hashtags that may offend your followers. Don’t just add these hashtags vet them first.

  • Do some research look at influencers within your industry what hashtags are they using. These will give you an idea of what hashtags may work for you.

REMINDER OF WHAT NOT TO DO

Please do not blanket copy and paste hashtags for the same post over and over again as this can reduce your reach and engagement and can possibly get your account banned.
